Petrokimia Gresik, an Agroindustrial Solutions company and a member of the Pupuk Indonesia holding company, has begun a sulfuric acid tank construction project to strengthen the national supply of NPK raw materials. Construction of the tank, with a total capacity of 40,000 tons, began with a groundbreaking ceremony recently held by the Deputy Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency, Aminuddin Ma'ruf, and the President Director of Petrokimia Gresik, Daconi Khotob.
The Deputy Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency, Aminuddin Ma'ruf, stated that national food self-sufficiency is a priority of President Prabowo Subianto in his Asta Cita (Asta Cita). He also commended the performance of Pupuk Indonesia, including Petrokimia Gresik, in supporting the achievement of food self-sufficiency, which was achieved ahead of schedule, namely by 2025.
"This project (construction of the sulfuric acid tank, Ed.) ultimately supports President Prabowo's Asta Cita on food security. Given the current global geopolitical conditions, our food security must be self-sufficient," said Aminuddin Ma'ruf.
Meanwhile, Daconi explained that sulfuric acid is a raw material for producing NPK compound fertilizer. This sulfuric acid tank will support the sustainability of NPK fertilizer production in the future.
"With the construction of this tank, Petrokimia Gresik will further strengthen the national supply of NPK fertilizer raw materials. Thus, Petrokimia Gresik can make an even greater contribution to achieving sustainable national food self-sufficiency by providing quality fertilizer for agriculture in Indonesia," said Daconi.
Petrokimia Gresik has been a domestic compound fertilizer pioneer since 2000 and has become a benchmark for NPK fertilizer technology in the country. With a total annual NPK fertilizer production capacity of 2.7 million tons, Petrokimia Gresik is the largest compound fertilizer producer in Indonesia.
"With this tank, Petrokimia Gresik can continue to increase its NPK fertilizer production capacity to support domestic fertilizer availability," Daconi added.
This sulfuric acid tank was built in the Petrokimia Gresik area in Gresik, East Java, specifically within the Phase III reclamation area, covering a 3-hectare (Ha) development area. Two sulfuric acid tanks were built, each with a capacity of 20,000 tons, bringing Petrokimia Gresik's total sulfuric acid storage capacity to 100,000 tons once the project is operational. The tank project is targeted for completion and operation in May 2027, with a construction period of approximately 18 months.
"We ensure that this project adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (K3) aspects. Petrokimia Gresik and the contractor have also signed a cooperation contract with the Petrokimia Gresik Hospital for emergency response. Furthermore, we prioritize environmental aspects in this project," concluded Daconi.
