PT Petrokimia Gresik (Persero), an Agroindustrial Solutions company and member of the PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) holding, together with the Surabaya City Government (Pemkot Surabaya), acted swiftly to handle a leak in the company's Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) water pipeline network in the Tambak Mayor area, Surabaya. The leak, which occurred on Tuesday (13/10/2026), was caused by excavation activities using heavy equipment during the construction of a water retention storage (long storage) aimed at managing rainwater inundation around the site by the Water Resources and Public Works Department (DSDABM) of the Surabaya City Government. Since the incident, both parties have continued to synergize in handling the situation by prioritizing safety, minimizing impacts on surrounding community activities, and maintaining the smooth operation of the company.
Corporate Secretary of Petrokimia Gresik, Nuril Huda, explained that immediately after the incident, the Petrokimia Gresik Technical Team alongside the Surabaya City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) were at the location to perform initial handling. As a control measure, the company immediately shut down pump operations on the affected network starting Tuesday (13/10/2026) at 12:30 WIB. This step successfully stopped the flow of water at the leak point so that initial conditions could be controlled, while inspection and repairs of the pipe network continued.
“From the very beginning, we together with the Surabaya City BPBD immediately moved to handle the situation at the scene. The water flow at the leak point has been successfully stopped, and currently we continue to coordinate with the Surabaya City Government to ensure the repair process runs smoothly until the pipe network returns to normal operation,” said Nuril.
He explained that the damaged pipe is part of the water supply network from Petrokimia Gresik's Gunungsari Water Treatment Plant. Although the water flow at the leak point has ceased, inspection and repair efforts are still being carried out to verify network conditions before resuming operation.
Furthermore, Petrokimia Gresik together with DSDABM Surabaya City Government held a coordination meeting on Tuesday (13/10/2026) to agree on steps for handling and rectifying the pipe network damage. During the meeting, the Surabaya City Government through DSDABM expressed its commitment to supporting the repair process to completion, including deploying 24-hour labor support.
Meanwhile, Head of the Drainage Division at DSDABM Surabaya City Government, Adi Gunita, explained that the damage to Petrokimia Gresik's GRP pipe network occurred due to excavation activities using heavy equipment during the construction of the water retention storage (long storage). The project is part of the Surabaya City Government's efforts to mitigate rainwater inundation around the Tambak Mayor area.
“The construction of this water retention storage (long storage) is carried out to help manage rainwater inundation around the location. Regarding the pipe network damage that occurred during the execution of the work, we have coordinated with Petrokimia Gresik and prepared 24-hour labor support. We are committed to continuing to support the repair process until all work is properly completed,” said Adi.
Nuril also expressed appreciation for the swift response and support from the Surabaya City Government, particularly DSDABM and Surabaya City BPBD, during the handling process in the field. According to him, the presence of the team from the beginning of the incident as well as the technical support provided formed a critical part of controlling the situation and supporting a smooth repair process.
“We appreciate the swift response and support of the Surabaya City Government, especially DSDABM and Surabaya City BPBD, who have jointly handled this since the start of the incident. This synergy reflects a shared commitment to resolving issues quickly and accurately, while maintaining safety as a top priority and minimizing impacts on the surrounding community,” Nuril stated.
Amidst the repair process, Nuril assured that the pipe leak incident did not affect Petrokimia Gresik's operational activities. The company has executed various mitigation steps and coordination with relevant parties to maintain smooth operations while repairs are underway.
“We have implemented various mitigation measures to ensure that Petrokimia Gresik's operational activities continue to run smoothly. Together with the Surabaya City Government and all relevant parties, we continue to oversee the repair process to completion so that the pipeline network can return to normal function,” he emphasized.
Through synergy with the Surabaya City Government and all relevant stakeholders, Petrokimia Gresik continues to work toward finalizing pipe network repairs with an emphasis on safety, minimizing impacts on surrounding community activities, and maintaining the company's operational continuity.
