PT Petrokimia Gresik (Persero), an Agroindustrial Solutions company and member of the PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) holding, marks National Batik Day, Friday (2/10/2026), as a reminder of the long journey of Batik Bangsawan, an MSME (UMKM) from Legowo Village, Bungah Sub-district, Gresik Regency, that grew alongside the guidance of PT Petrokimia Gresik (Persero), an Agroindustrial Solutions company and member of the PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) holding. Starting from a small enterprise in a narrow alley, Batik Bangsawan is now capable of recording a turnover of around Rp70 million per month, creating job opportunities for nine people, and reaching national to international markets. The owner of Batik Bangsawan, Midhiatul Fitriyah, expressed appreciation for Petrokimia Gresik's assistance, which she considers helped open up space for her business to continue growing.
The business initiated by Fitri, as she is familiarly called, along with her late husband since 2016 was built amidst various limitations. Fitri admitted to starting Batik Bangsawan from scratch. At that time, she was still learning about the production process as well as how to market products so they could be accepted by more consumers.
“I was guided from zero. I used to just trade. Praise God, now it can be like this,” said Fitri.
Throughout its journey, Batik Bangsawan received assistance from Petrokimia Gresik ranging from access to capital, capacity building through various trainings, product standardization support, to promotion and marketing facilitation.
The Corporate Secretary of Petrokimia Gresik, Nuril Huda, stated that the assistance was directed toward building a stronger business foundation, both in terms of product quality, business management capacity, and competitiveness.
“What we want to encourage is how MSMEs can continuously improve their capacity and product quality, then grow into stronger businesses that deliver a multiplier effect for the community. Batik Bangsawan serves as an illustration of how sustainable assistance can open up more opportunities for MSMEs,” said Nuril.
One of Batik Bangsawan's key achievements was its success in obtaining the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) certificate in 2025 supported by Petrokimia Gresik's Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program. This quality strengthening was subsequently followed by expanding opportunities to introduce products across various national- and international-scale forums.
At Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2025, Petrokimia Gresik brought Batik Bangsawan alongside Gula Aren Temon to introduce local products to a broader market, including prospective international buyers. That opportunity continued at INACRAFT 2026, when Batik Bangsawan, together with OG Jewelry and Deweluxe, became part of 20 MSME fostered partners of Pupuk Indonesia Group featured in the exhibition. At the opening of INACRAFT 2026, the booth of MSMEs fostered by Pupuk Indonesia was also visited by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
In line with these various opportunities, Batik Bangsawan products, which were previously marketed in Gresik and its surroundings, have now reached national and international markets, including Thailand and New York, partly through the utilization of digital platforms. Batik Bangsawan also successfully won the Platinum award at the Bina Mitra UMKM Award 2025.
For Fitri, the opportunity to participate in various exhibitions served not only as a means to promote products, but also as a space to learn and understand market developments.
“In those exhibition forums, we could not only promote, but also learn. We learned how to introduce products and gained new experiences,” she said.
Marketing support was also felt through Petrokimia Gresik's trust in using Batik Bangsawan products to fulfill a number of the company's souvenir needs.
“I am very grateful to Petrokimia Gresik. Thanks to their assistance and guidance, my batik MSME still exists today and continues to be sought after. We were not only given training, but also assisted with sales,” said Fitri.
Nuril added that developing batik MSMEs yields broader benefits as it helps preserve cultural heritage while driving the community's economy.
“When batik MSMEs grow, job opportunities are created, the local economy moves, and cultural heritage remains alive and increasingly recognized. This is the impact we want to keep driving through MSME empowerment programs,” Nuril emphasized.
After a decade of running the business, Batik Bangsawan has not only grown in terms of markets and sales. The enterprise, once built amidst various limitations, has also created employment opportunities for nine people in the surrounding environment.
“I started very small back then. Now, praise God, this business can grow and provide jobs for others. I hope Batik Bangsawan can continue to grow, become better known, and carry the name of Gresik further,” Fitri concluded.
